Growing up in Tokyo, Yoshiko Yamamoto first studied sculpture at Tama Art University in Japan, and then, after moving to California, studied classical music and modern Japanese history at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1996, as she worked as a freelance writer, she founded with her husband, Bruce Smith, The Arts & Crafts Press in Berkeley, teaching herself (with the help of wonderful mentors) the craft of letterpress printing. For her limited edition prints, Yoshiko first sketches flora and fauna she finds either in America or Japan--anything from fir trees, pines, maples, and poppies, to heron, koi fish, and crickets-- and then after multiple drawings, water colors and oil paintings she begins cutting the blocks. Sometimes she works with wood blocks, usually cherry, and other times she chooses linoleum. Yoshiko takes the blocks and prints each color separately on a Vandercock printing press, using as many as twenty blocks per print to achieve the desired effect. Yoshiko now resides in a small coastal town of Washington with her husband and her two-year-old son.
Care of the Prints We use acid-free paper, archival mats, color-fast ink by Daniel Smith to ensure the longevity of the prints. In Order to preserve the prints in its original condition, we recommend artwork kept in a dry area with no direct sunlight.
All image sizes given on this page are mat sizes only. Please call if you would likemore information.
